Erica:

1) Every Island Has a Personality — Know Which One Is Yours

“If you’re looking for the best resorts in Hawaii, they’re going to be on Maui. If you want chill and lush, that’s Kauai. History and food? Oahu. Adventure? Big Island.” — Jordan & Erica

Oahu is for culture lovers and food obsessives. Best food scene in Hawaii. Only real nightlife. Pearl Harbor, Bishop Museum, and some of the most stunning drives on the planet. Don’t sleep on the North Shore.

Maui is the great catchall. Volcano at sunrise. Road to Hana. World-class resorts. Great beaches. If it’s your first trip and you can only pick one — pick Maui.

Kauai is the exhale. Smallest island. Lushest jungle. Most miles of beach. Go here when you want to slow down and actually feel like you’re somewhere different.

The Big Island is for the adventurers. Hike an active volcano. Night snorkel with manta rays. Stargaze from the top of the world. See a black sand beach covered with sea turtles. No other island on earth packs this much into one place — but you have to be willing to drive to find it.

The Takeaway: Don’t try to do all four islands in one week. Pick one or two. Go deep. Come back for the rest.

2) The Best Hawaii Experiences Are the Ones Nobody Talks About

“You can go snorkeling during whale season and hear the whale songs blaring in your ear. It’s gorgeous.” — Erica

Snorkel during whale season. January and February, the humpbacks are singing. You can hear them underwater — loud and clear. Nobody puts this in the brochure.

Take the ferry to Lanai. Seventy-five minutes from Maui. Walk ten minutes from the harbor. You’re at Hulopoe Bay — what Jordan and Erica call the best beach in all of Hawaii. Empty. Dolphins in the bay. Untouched reef.

Do the farm tours. Sounds boring. Never boring. Dragon fruit, alpacas, local honey, and parts of the island most tourists never see. Great way to support local and get off the beaten path legally.

The Takeaway: The highlight of your Hawaii trip probably isn’t in anyone’s top ten list. Leave room to find it.

3) Make Every Meal Count — and Roll With Everything Else

“Every meal is going to be expensive. You don’t want to waste your money on a bad meal.” — Erica

Research your restaurants before you go. Hawaii food is expensive — even food trucks. A bad meal stings more when you’re already paying Hawaii prices. Plan ahead and eat well every single time.

Don’t overload your itinerary. Get out early, see things, and be back at the resort by lunch. Build in beach days. Build in nothing days. The people who try to do everything see nothing.

Something will go wrong. That’s fine. Wind cancels your Napali Coast boat tour. Someone gets sick. It rains for three days. Roll with it — because you’re still in Hawaii.

The Takeaway: The trip won’t be perfect. The mindset will make or break it.

3.5) What’s ONE LESSON Everyone Should Take Away?

“We put so much pressure on these trips to be perfect. But things are always going to go wrong. Guess what — you’re on vacation.” — Jordan & Erica

Readjust, don’t catastrophize. A canceled tour turned into a private whale watching experience. A sick day turned into a slow morning with room service and ocean views. It’s still Hawaii.

Happiness is a choice, not a condition. Erica said it best. You can find a reason to be miserable anywhere. You can also find a reason to be grateful anywhere — especially when you’re standing on a beach in the middle of the Pacific.

The trip of a lifetime doesn’t have to be perfect to be the trip of a lifetime.

The Takeaway: Stop chasing the perfect Hawaii trip. Start enjoying the one you’re actually on.

Listen on Spotify

Connect with Jordan & Erica:

thehawaiivacationguide.com

IG: @thehawaiivacationguide

YouTube: @thehawaiivacationguide

“Life Is Built, Not Born.”

Joe Ciccarone

© Copyright - Joe Ciccarone 2026 - Built Not Born Podcast. Steve was Relson Gracie’s first American Black Belt, is a world-renowned strength coach, and the man who brought BJJ to Philadelphia (and possibly the East Coast) in the 1990s.

Steve lived out of one bag for fifteen years while traveling to six continents. He made eight trips to Russia alone.

Now he’s on the Olympic Peninsula — still on the mat, still coaching, still going. And everything he’s learned about staying strong, staying healthy, and slowing the clock down to a trickle?

It’s all right here.

3.5 Ideas from Steve Maxwell:

1) Every Injury Came From Competition — Train Accordingly

“All too often, we set these goals with no rhyme or reason. Intending to do things is more important than having a specific goal.” — Steve Maxwell

Competition broke him down. Flow rolling built him back up. Every single BJJ injury Steve sustained over decades came from competition. The shift to flow rolling didn’t make him soft — it kept him on the mat.

Find the right training partner. Slow, smooth, and non-ego-driven. When your partners are laughing during the roll, you’re doing it right.

Put yourself in bad positions on purpose. Start from side control. Start from the bottom. Problem-solve your way out. That’s where the real growth is.

The Takeaway: Hard rolling is fun — right up until your fifties. After that, smart rolling is what keeps you in the game.

2) One Hard Strength Session Beats Five Lazy Ones

“If your workouts are taking more than 40 minutes, you’re probably overtraining.” — Steve Maxwell

Isometrics are the secret weapon. Hold a half pushup. Hold the top of a chin-up. Get into a horse stance for two minutes. Simple, brutal, and easy on the joints.

One intense session per week is enough. If you’re training jiu-jitsu three times a week, one hard strength session is plenty — but it has to be genuinely hard.

Muscle you build young is money in the bank. You’re not building new muscle after 50 if you’ve been training your whole life. You’re maintaining. Protect what you’ve got.

The Takeaway: You don’t need more time in the gym. You need more intensity in the time you have.

3) Sleep Is the Most Unsexy Performance Tool You’re Ignoring

“If you’re not sleeping well, every aspect of your life is going to be horrible.” — Steve Maxwell

Tape over every LED light in the room. Blackout tape on every blinking light. Sleeping mask if you need it. Your sleep environment matters more than you think.

Left side is best. It actually facilitates digestion. Back is second. Stomach sleeping — skip it.

Don’t cheap out on your mattress. If you’re waking up with hot spots, stiffness, or a kinked neck — your bed is the problem, not your body.

The Takeaway: You can optimize your training all you want. If you’re not sleeping, none of it matters.

3.5) What’s ONE LESSON Everyone Should Take Away?

“If everyone were just strength training — it goes a long way to slowing down the aging process.” — Steve Maxwell

It’s the simplest insurance policy you have. Your whole metabolism runs on active muscle tissue. Let it disappear and everything else goes with it.

You don’t need much. One session. Twenty to forty minutes. Intense. Done. That’s it.

And learn to get up off the floor. Steve taught his 89-year-old mother-in-law the tactical standup. She gets up like a teenager now. That one skill is everything when you’re older.

The Takeaway: Strength training isn’t vanity.
