Prove Them Wrong

Steve Carcarey — Former Head Baseball Coach, Widener University

Steve Carcarey got cut from his school baseball team.

Two years in a row.

Most kids quit right there.

The coach thought his message was clear…

You’re not good enough.

Steve heard differently.

Never be defined by someone else’s opinion of you.

The following year Steve tried out for the more competitive high school team.

Different leader.

New environment.

Even more competitive.

The team that should’ve been an even longer shot.

He didn’t just make it.

He was named captain.

And was elected into their Hall of Fame years later.

That’s the focus of Built Not Born Episode #90.

Let that sink in.

Cut twice by the leader who did not believe in him.

Now his name hangs in his school’s HOF forever.

How is that possible?

Steve refused to believe the people who said he couldn’t.

What hits:

There will always be someone happy to tell us what we can’t do.

The coach who cuts us.

The director who doesn’t believe in us.

The voice that says we’re not good enough.

Guess what?

They don’t get a vote.

Steve then built a HOF coaching career and a thriving business on that one truth.

Now he hands that mindset to his kids.

Don’t believe the people who doubt you.

And maybe even get inducted.

Prove them wrong.
